American civil rights advocate
Eric Mann is a prominent American civil rights advocate with a long history of involvement in various social and political movements. His activism spans multiple fields, including civil rights, anti-war efforts, labor rights, and environmental protection. Throughout his career, Mann has worked with numerous organizations, such as the Congress of Racial Equality, the Newark Community Union Project, and the United Automobile Workers, demonstrating his commitment to addressing social and economic inequalities.
Mann's leadership roles have included his involvement with the Students for a Democratic Society (SDS) and its faction, the Weathermen, which later became the Weather Underground. His activism has sometimes led to confrontations with authorities, resulting in arrests and imprisonment. Nevertheless, Mann has achieved significant successes, such as helping to keep a General Motors assembly plant open in Van Nuys, California, for ten years. He has also played a crucial role in shaping the environmental justice movement in the United States. As the founder and director of the Labor/Community Strategy Center in Los Angeles, Mann has continued to advocate for social justice, including through his work with the Bus Riders Union, which has pursued landmark civil rights lawsuits against transit authorities.
