Perushim

Disciples of the Vilna Gaon

The Perushim were a group of Jewish activists who emerged as disciples of the esteemed Vilna Gaon, Elijah ben Solomon Zalman. Originating from Lithuania, they belonged to the misnagdim section of the community, which played a significant role in shaping their beliefs and values. As devoted followers of the Vilna Gaon, they were deeply influenced by his teachings and principles.

At the beginning of the 19th century, the Perushim made a pivotal decision to leave Lithuania and settle in the Land of Israel, then a part of Ottoman Syria. By doing so, they became an integral part of the Old Yishuv, a community of Jewish residents who had been living in the region for centuries. Through their activism, the Perushim aimed to contribute to the development and growth of the Jewish community in the Land of Israel, driven by their commitment to the principles and ideals of their revered leader, the Vilna Gaon.
