Isaac ben Saul Chmelniker Candia
Isaac ben Saul Chmelniker Candia was a Hebrew poet active in Warsaw, Poland, during the first half of the 19th century. His literary output includes a notable elegy commemorating the death of Alexander I, Emperor of Russia, which was accompanied by a German translation by Elkan M. Engel. This work showcases Candia's ability to craft poetic tributes to significant figures of his time.
Candia's poetic range is further demonstrated by his dramatic poem, Toledot Mosheh, a two-act work based on the life of Moses. In addition to original compositions, he also translated poems from prominent European writers, including Schiller's Die Bürgschaft and works by Gellert. One of his dedication odes was written to mark the inauguration of a house of prayer and a study center for the Law, highlighting his connection to the Jewish community in Warsaw. Through his writings, Candia made a contribution to the literary landscape of his era.
