Lina Schwarz

Italian writer (1876–1947)

Lina Schwarz was a notable Italian writer, educator, and pacifist, born in 1876 to a Jewish family in Verona. She spent the majority of her life in Milan, where she became an active participant in the women's rights movement in Italy. This involvement led her to engage in civic works projects, focusing on the welfare of disadvantaged children. Through her work with children, Schwarz developed a passion for teaching and education, which ultimately led to her becoming a prominent figure in children's literature.

As a children's book author and contributor to children's newspapers, Schwarz made significant contributions to the world of children's education and entertainment. She also collaborated with musicians to set her poems to music, recognizing the potential for song to enhance learning. Many traditional Italian nursery rhymes are attributed to her, and her work remains widely known and appreciated in Italy. One of her most famous poems, "Stella, stellina, la notte si avvicina," is still widely recognized today, although her authorship of it was unfortunately lost to the public after World War II. Schwarz passed away in 1947, leaving behind a legacy as a dedicated educator, writer, and advocate for children's welfare.
