He held esteemed positions at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, serving as an Institute Professor and later as a professor emeritus of linguistics. Halle's work had a profound impact on the development of modern phonology, earning him recognition as a pioneer in the field.
Halle's notable publications include "On Accent and Juncture in English," co-authored with Noam Chomsky and Fred Lukoff in 1956, and "The Sound Pattern of English," co-authored with Chomsky in 1968. He also collaborated on the earliest theory of generative metrics and developed the Distributed Morphology framework with Alec Marantz. Halle passed away in 2018, leaving behind a legacy of groundbreaking research that continues to influence the field of linguistics.
