Wanda Landowska

clavecinista y pianista polaca

Wanda Landowska was a renowned Polish and French musician, born in 1879, who made significant contributions to the world of music as a harpsichordist and pianist. Her work played a crucial role in popularizing the harpsichord, an instrument that had experienced a decline in popularity, in the early 20th century. Through her performances, teaching, and writings, Landowska helped to revive interest in the harpsichord, introducing its unique sound to new audiences.

Landowska's recordings were particularly influential in showcasing the harpsichord's capabilities, and she achieved a notable milestone in 1933 by becoming the first person to record Johann Sebastian Bach's iconic Goldberg Variations on the harpsichord. Her connection to France, where she eventually settled, led to her becoming a naturalized French citizen in 1938. Throughout her career, Landowska remained dedicated to promoting the harpsichord, leaving a lasting legacy in the music world until her passing in 1959.
